Wrexham Air Quality Monitoring

When Wrexham County Borough Council secured funding from the Welsh Government’s to help monitor air quality in the city, they turned to our Air Quality team to deliver an innovative and sustainable solution.

We have installed 11 monitors across Wrexham. Designed to record particulate matter sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide levels at specific locations, they also capture data on environmental noise. Connected to ADAHub, our in-house monitoring platform, these sensors give Council personnel access to a dashboard of real-time air and noise quality data.

The sensors will be in place for three years and are currently undergoing calibration. Our team is analyzing several months of collected data to apply corrections and finalize the network's accuracy, using an existing Automatic Urban and Rural Network (AURN)) monitoring station as a reference point.

The sensor network delivers the detailed air monitoring data that the AURN station provides, but across a substantially smaller footprint. The compact nature of the sensors means we can install wherever they are needed, with minimal power requirements.

Once calibration is complete, the Council aims to make the data available to the public. Councillor Hugh Jones stated that, “Investing in real-time monitoring systems will allow us to better understand the environmental factors that affect public health and quality of life. The data collected will support informed decision-making in areas such as urban planning, traffic management, and public health initiatives.”
