230 kV E-Stress Study and Fiber Replacement

Powering Sacramento

Engineering a more reliable fiber system and electrical grid

When the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) was looking for a more reliable fiber system, we were brought in to help. Following an electrical stress study, we proposed an above-ground, fiber, all-dielectric self-supporting (ADSS) cable replacement on an existing 230 kV corridor that, in some locations, included a third circuit and distribution underbuild.

Our scope included electrical clearances, structural design parameters, and calculation development that would verify vendor calculations for electrical space potential (applied from the transmission circuits to the ADSS line). We also modelled the line with PLS CADD to determine wire tensions.

By replacing the ADSS line and rotating electrical phasing to produce a safer and more reliable fiber system, we improved electric grid reliability for residents in Sacramento and, due to the great relationship we built with SMUD on this project, we continue to support the community through various other projects with SMUD.
