Advanced Water Purification Program Technical Guidance Manuals

Water scarcity is a significant concern across the US Southwest—population growth presents water providers with big challenges to meet demand. A state’s environmental department wanted to establish and implement a roadmap for future statewide advance water purification (AWP) program efforts. This would include permitting standards and permit application processes for AWP facilities. They reached out to our team to help.

Leveraging our global water reuse experience, we developed detailed manuals to guide AWP project planning, design, and implementation. In the first manual, we outlined technical guidance for wastewater treatment upstream of an advanced water program facility. This covers source water characterization, wastewater treatment process modeling, minimum secondary treatment and nitrogen removal targets, and membrane bioreactor design. The manual also addresses pathogen removal credits, return flow management, flow equalization basin design, and required monitoring instrumentation. In the second manual, we outlined corrosion control—including internal corrosion mechanisms, parameters, analyses, treatment approaches, challenges specific to AWP, system characterization, and public outreach.

With these manuals to guide advanced AWP programs, our client can provide sustainable, safe, reliable drinking water supply that’s resilient and supports growing populations and economies.
