NY Creates owns and operates the Albany NanoTech Complex, the largest and most advanced non-profit semiconductor research and development (R&D) facility in the US. It brings together industry leaders, academic institutions, and international partners to drive the development of next-generation chips and fabrication processes.
To support the complex’s rapid growth, NY Creates set out to develop a master plan to guide the complex’s expansion and engaged our team to help. The master plan establishes a strategic framework for three major phases of growth, enabling over 1 million square feet (92,903 square metres) of new R&D space, supported by integrated planning, sustainability, and facility design services provided by our team.
Phase 1 focused on the NanoFab Xtension (NFX), a major expansion of highly controlled cleanroom and research environments needed to manufacture and study advanced semiconductor technologies. The facility supports more than 120 tools used to produce and measure silicon wafers—the foundation of modern computer chips. It also includes Class 1,000 cleanrooms where air quality is tightly regulated to protect sensitive processes. We designed specialized structural systems to support heavy manufacturing equipment and reduce vibration, providing the precision required for next-generation research.
Phase 2, the Zero-Energy Mixed-Use Facility (ZEN), is a high-performance, energy-efficient research and collaboration space. ZEN was the largest zero-energy-capable building of its kind in the US at construction completion. The NYS ITS Tier 3 data center, housed on the first floor, provides critical IT infrastructure for nearly 60 state agencies. Through waste heat recovery, the data center prevents temperature buildup while efficiently providing warmth for the rest of the building, eliminating the need for fossil fuel consumption year-round.
Currently in progress, Phase 3 involves NanoFab Reflection, an expansion aimed at enhancing advanced semiconductor research capabilities.
Today, through NY Creates’ commitment to growth, the Albany NanoTech Complex continues to expand global partnerships, attracting industry pioneers in the semiconductor market, energy efficiency, and renewable energy technologies.
