Anaheim Water Recycling Demonstration Facility

The City of Anaheim desired a new water recycling demonstration facility (WRDF) to prove how wastewater treatment plants can operate in downtown environments and meet urban recycled water demands. Our team was brought in for planning and engineering support. The challenge? Designing a noiseless, odor-free urban treatment plant to facilitate public education and provide precedent for future sustainable developments.

A brilliant contribution to the community, the WRDF was developed to emphasize the importance of water reuse and illustrate how to accomplish treatment with a small footprint. We incorporated glass walls, walkways, and informational graphics to educate touring visitors. Our design needed to convince the public that a treatment facility could be built in any urban location without disrupting the community. We did this by creating an environment with minimal noise and odor, unnoticeable to nearby pedestrians.

The demonstration facility treats 50,000 gallons per day and is used for toilets, landscape irrigation, and nearby parks. Constructed in 14 months, the WRDF effectively highlights that wastewater treatment can be accomplished in a highly-urbanized environment and provide benefits to the community.
