Austin Independent School District – James Bowie High School Modernization

James Bowie High School, Austin Independent School District’s largest campus, now supports a growing student body through a comprehensive transformation that modernizes facilities while respecting its unique setting. Designed to serve 2,900 students, the expanded campus resolves long-standing capacity challenges, preserves its urban forest, and complies with environmental regulations, creating a future-ready learning environment.

Our master plan set out to create modern athletics and fine arts facilities as well as a new parking garage. By relocating the tennis courts to the rooftop of the new 500-space parking garage, the design team allowed for the new athletics building to be adjacent to the outdoor fields. This facility includes a competition and practice gym, weight room, locker rooms, health studios, and training spaces.

The fine arts expansion introduces a 600-seat auditorium, scenery construction areas, and the latest theater technology. The former gym houses band halls and a dance studio, while repurposed locker rooms provide new music and visual arts spaces.

Ultimately, this project will enhance student creativity, performance, and collaboration.
