The Austin State Hospital Replacement is a cornerstone of the campus master plan to create a leading-edge Brain Health System. The new, consolidated facility replaces eight buildings, bringing 240 private patient beds under one roof to improve efficiency, dignity, and quality of care. Designed using research-backed, human-centered strategies, the hospital provides a safe, therapeutic environment that supports recovery while reducing stress for patients and staff. Site planning preserves historic elements and mature trees while enabling a seamless transition of services and utilities.
As the first phase of a broader vision, the project establishes a framework for an integrated continuum of care that includes inpatient and crisis services, research, education, supportive housing, and outpatient programs. The hospital follows a house-neighborhood-downtown model, organizing care into smaller, clustered settings that promote comfort, safety, and connection.
Trauma-informed and evidence-based design principles shape every aspect of the environment. Private rooms, access to daylight and outdoor spaces, circadian lighting, acoustic control, and biophilic elements support healing and well-being. Clear sightlines, open care areas, and ligature-resistant features enhance safety, while thoughtful amenities and restorative spaces foster dignity and engagement.
Together, these strategies create a flexible, future-ready facility that advances a more integrated, stigma-free approach to mental healthcare.
