Eliminating harmful emissions by transitioning from coal to natural gas

In an effort to generate more environmentally friendly energy, the Big Cajun II plant needed to convert from burning coal to natural gas. To help them achieve their goal, we provided the balance of plant engineering and services necessary for the implementation of the conversion.

Our goal? Convert the 580 MW Big Cajun II Unit 2 from coal to natural gas for both main firing and ignition. Our scope for this project included the design of deep foundations for new flue gas recirculation fans and the design of approximately 1,500 linear feet new natural gas main supply piping from the pressure reducing station to the Unit 2 boiler. We also performed a hazardous area classification study which resulted in equipment relocation and associated electrical and instrumentation design required to support the unit conversion.

The result? The Big Cajun II power plant can now power Louisiana with energy that will be sustainable for years to come.
