A technology-rich learning community to promote collaboration, student-directed learning, and more

How can high schools provide better instruction? One answer is to consolidate strong resources. Bloomfield Hills Schools (BHS) combined two high schools into a single, bold new campus centered around learning communities. Our team, working with BHS, conducted a pilot program for primary research on furnishings. The program helped the district identify needs before the planning and design process, which brought it all together.

Working side-by-side with Fielding Nair International to design the new Bloomfield Hills High School, we created the first high school in the nation with physical space dedicated to the learning community concept. The learning communities provide a variety of learning spaces that encourage collaboration, student-directed learning, project-based learning, and interdisciplinary instruction.

The new high school also features fine arts, music, performing arts, student radio and TV, a gymnasium/field house, a 12-lane pool, and a central commons/building heart with media and a knowledge market. A distributed dining concept enables students to dine throughout the entire facility, strengthening relationships and collaboration.
