Boston's Safe Traffic Signal Upgrades - Grant Funding Application

To make their streets safer for everyone, the City of Boston wanted to upgrade traffic signals to align with their new signal policy that prioritizes safe passage for people whether they’re traveling by foot or on wheels. The City engaged us to help apply for grant funding to realize this safety goal.

To help the City receive $14.4 million for a Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Implementation Discretionary Grant, our Urban Mobility group provided detailed analyses, graphics, and a compelling narrative to bolster the application. We conducted a rigorous intersection prioritization analysis that included safety factors, nearby vulnerable user groups, and proximity to important transportation, healthcare, and civic destinations.

We’re now supporting the City as they work through the grant agreement and work toward implementation. Using this funding, they’ll upgrade traffic signals at up to 50 locations across the city, with a focus on underserved communities along the city’s identified high-crash network—the streets where the majority of crashes occur. The implementation of new signals will reflect the City’s new signal policy and reduce conflicts between vulnerable road users, such as bicyclists and pedestrians, and drivers. Upgraded signals and timings will also improve overall comfort for pedestrians navigating intersections. Improved signaling includes leading pedestrian intervals—signal timing that helps people get across the street quickly and safely—and no-turn on red regulations and signage for vehicles.

With funding for safer traffic signal upgrades and improvements, the City of Boston is on the road to a safer future for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.
