Box Street & Newton Barge Parks

The Greenpoint community is diverse, and its residents have a wide range of recreational needs—both passive and active. To design two waterfront parks on Newton Creek in Brooklyn, we needed to cater to everybody’s requirements, and we needed to plan for long-term coastal use.

As landscape architects and engineers, we transformed two three-acre areas into new community assets. Newton Barge Park includes an existing park and was expanded onto an industrial property whereas Box Street Park converted a Metropolitan Transportation Authority facility.

Our schematic design calls for a waterfront promenade, rolling topography, paths and seating, soccer and softball fields, a basketball court, and a new comfort station. Portions of Newton Barge Park will maintain a New York Department of Environmental Protection working waterfront platform. That’ll require access easements, but we’ll design those to meander seamlessly through the park.

Long-term coastal resiliency means broader storm surge protection for the community. We combined our efforts with those of nearby developers to double down on safety. We’ll provide all geotechnical, remediation, permitting, and design approvals for the two parks.

And the Greenpoint community will have two excellent places to play, sit, or explore.
