Creating a vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood in the heart of downtown Charlotte

As one of the most historically-important development projects in North Carolina, Brooklyn Village will create a new, vibrant, mixed-use neighborhood in the heart of downtown Charlotte.

The 17-acre site sits near what was the heart of Brooklyn, a neighborhood in Charlotte that was the center of the city’s African-American community for nearly a century. But, as in many US cities following World War II, wealthier residents began leaving Charlotte for new suburbs. Hoping to lure them—and their tax dollars—back, the city bulldozed Brooklyn under the federal urban renewal program in the 1960s, forcing residents out and leaving a large swath of underutilized land.

To revitalize this area, our development team—Peebles Corporation, Conformity Corporation, and Stantec—is handling master planning, design, and development services for a $700 million mixed-use neighborhood. In addition to providing design and development services, Stantec will also be part owner of the project. Once complete, Brooklyn Village will contain over 1,200 homes, 2 hotels, more than 680,000 square feet of office space, 250,000 square feet of shops, and nearly 2 acres of parks and open space.

We’re making sure we’re promoting diversity and honoring this area’s history every step of the way. Our goal? 35% of the work is to be completed by women-owned, minority, and small local businesses.
