As part of a larger campus growth strategy that required extensive reuse of existing infrastructure, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia wanted to relocate their Center for Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment (CFDT) to be adjacent to their Fetal Heart Program. They engaged our team to provide architectural, engineering, and consulting services for this effort.
We began by conducting a comprehensive assessment of the existing department, then held collaborative workshops to evaluate current operations and define opportunities for an improved future state. Through planning sessions, schematic design studies, and functional programming exercises, our team developed and validated design solutions for the unit layout and ultrasound suites. We used physical mockups and virtual reality modeling to further informed decisions, helping optimize environments for high-risk maternal care and fetal therapy.
CFDT is one of the few departments at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia that serves an adult patient population. To create a welcoming environment for expectant mothers and their support networks, the design team enhanced Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s standard finish palette with warm accent colors, comfortable furnishings, and hospitality-inspired elements that support relaxation and well-being.
Early project goals established priorities for efficiency, flexibility, and responsible stewardship of resources, enabling the team to deliver a budget-conscious solution without compromising function or aesthetics. By combining user engagement, immersive design tools, and thoughtful planning, we designed a supportive environment tailored to the specialized needs of fetal diagnosis and treatment.
In its new location, CFDT enhances patient experiences and provides flexibility as the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia continues to expand their maternal and fetal care programs.
