Helping patients and families with a comprehensive well-being program in a natural setting
The Center for Building Hope had an overriding goal to create an optimal healing environment for people affected by cancer. We responded with a solution centered around holistic, nature inspired elements in both design and materials, mimicking the homeopathic and healing environment provided by the facility owner. Stantec provided site selection services, concept and site planning, civil engineering, site permitting, stormwater management design and surveying.
The center is situated on a larger wildlife and wetland preserve, and the site and building itself was designed with input from patients, families, and caretakers. The ultimate design combined healing arts and nature while simultaneously providing a learning case study in sustainable architecture and site design. The healing experience begins upon approach to the site, which includes a view over a water feature to the high arch connecting the counseling center to the program pavilion. Healing gardens, butterfly gardens, an outdoor dining terrace, pervious walking trails, and a Tai Chi lawn were placed around the campus, and most recently, a new three story observation deck and contemplative walk were added to the grounds.
