Helping students and families stay active and connected to schools

When previous generations were young, it was quite common to see them walking or biking to school and around their neighborhoods. Nowadays only about 10% of children do so.

Stantec is helping change that statistic so today’s children can experience the health, social and environmental benefits of walking and biking. How? By designing improvements as part of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program, a combined federal, state and local effort to make walking and biking safer and more appealing for students and families.

We helped the South Carolina Department of Transportation improve the infrastructure around four schools in Charleston and Dorchester counties as part of the state’s version of the SRTS program. Our work included designing sidewalk and drainage improvements along identified routes to fill in gaps and make sure all surfaces are in good repair. We made accessibility upgrades so that children with disabilities can easily enjoy the routes as well. Additionally, we implemented traffic calming techniques to slow traffic, and we improved signage and pavement markings to clearly identify and mark the routes.

Now students can get to school by walking or biking on routes that are new, improved and above all, safe.
