Fast-tracked design and construction provided an interim water treatment solution buying time for long-term solution development

When the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) issued new health-based recommendations for two industrial chemicals—perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfanic acid (PFOS)—and established a hazard index for perfluoro alkyl substances (PFAS) found in drinking water, 8 out of 11 wells in the City of Cottage Grove became non-compliant.

The mission was clear: implement a solution to bring critical wells into compliance with the more stringent guidance as quickly as possible. With high water demand season approaching, the City implemented restrictions and turned to Stantec. Within eight days of receiving the news, our team developed an MDH-approved blending schedule and a concept to build two water treatment facilities. We then initiated a specialized, fast-tracked design and construction schedule for interim treatment systems that remove PFAS from water supplies at two critical wells, all within 90 days of receiving news of the revised guidance.

Our problem-solving delivered an emergency interim treatment plan while buying time to develop a long-term treatment solution. This quick action enabled the City to lift water restrictions after just over two months, and the public now has renewed confidence in its drinking water supply.
