Using data and tools to help cities allocate and monetize curbside spaces
Curbs are no longer solely for car storage—they’re a terminal for multi-modal mobility including ridesharing, deliveries, shuttles, and micro-mobility. By managing spaces per user demands, curbs can generate more revenue and greater capacity, reduce congestion, and improve traffic conditions and safety.
City Tech Collaborative partnered with industry experts to create a scalable model to assess curb activity with a framework of flexible management and dynamic pricing. Stantec developed an activity and pricing model to estimate optimal use and transactional value of the curb by mode. Using big data sets of travel flows and points of interest provided by Teralytics, HERE, SpotHero, CarrierDirect, and other partners, the model was applied to Chicago’s Loop district, where Bosch will create a test bed for pricing and curb reservation technologies.
Use cases for the solution increased access to points of interest by: rideshare and delivery vehicles, eliminating double-parking and bike lane blocking; e-scooters and Divvy bike share, boosting use; and transit and micro-transit options, expanding ridership. These and other use cases have the benefit of reducing off-street parking while increasing curbside revenues for cities of all sizes.
