A high-capacity wastewater pump station in a significant suburban growth area
With Charlotte’s suburbs outgrowing existing infrastructure, the City needed a bigger pumping station to serve their expanded community’s needs. Located on the North Carolina/South Carolina state line, the previous pumping station was undersized for current and future development and flows.
Our job? Owner’s advisor services as well as planning, modeling, survey, design, permitting, easements, and construction administration for the replacement and relocation of the Clems Branch Pump Station. Starting with a preliminary engineering report, we explored a range of alternatives that considered lifecycle costs, expected useful lives of components, maintenance, public perception, and environmental impacts. The new station can pump 4 MGD (millions of gallons per day).
Finished in December 2021, the Clems Branch Pump Station, Gravity Sewer, and Force Main includes a wastewater grinder, a triplex submersible pumping station with 16-foot by 16-foot (4.9-metre by 4.9-metre) wet well, 6,000 feet (1.8 kilometres) of force main, an emergency bypass pumping connection, a magnetic flow meter, odor control, a pump control building, a spill detention basin, a gravity sewer extension, and a generator.
With this new pump station, Charlotte’s infrastructure can support growing communities in these expanding suburbs for decades to come.
