Connecting with the community to protect the wetlands using creative solutions

Helping to build the new substation on 15 acres of our client’s land was a challenge we were eager to meet, particularly given two wetlands on the site, which is surrounded by residential properties. Through a major community relations program and local meetings, we listened to the residents throughout the design of the project.  We met the greatest challenge, minimizing impact to the wetlands, by constructing retaining walls outside the locally required wetland buffer area and building the substation on both sides of the wetland.  We designed a bridge over the wetlands for traffic.  Our detention basin design included long flow paths and naturalized vegetated bottoms to maximize detention time for runoff from smaller storms and improve runoff water quality.

Our civil engineering, geotechnical, and detention basin design resulted in obtaining all the necessary permits. We even conducted a bog turtle habitat survey and coordinated with US FWS and PA FBC prior to obtaining the permits.

Subsequently, we oversaw substation construction to assure compliance with the permits and to provide geotechnical inspection for the installation of the retaining walls and wetland bridge crossing.
