Improving the quality of data being collected for occupational exposure assessments

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) requirements can be complex to navigate. When several industry clients needed confidential support with responses to the EPA TSCA Section 4 test orders for occupational exposure data, they engaged our help to collect the necessary data to determine workers’ chemical exposure risks.

We helped them respond to the EPA’s request for dermal wipe sampling, dermal absorption data, and inhalation exposure monitoring data for several chemicals prioritized for TSCA risk evaluation. Our work consisted of facilitating the identification of similar exposure groups, collection of qualitative information for relevant occupational exposure scenarios, and sampling test plan development. We also facilitated communications with the EPA, sample collection, and data collation and submittal to the EPA.

Our ChemRisk team has been involved in the analysis and public commentary on all TSCA risk evaluations conducted to date. We’ve been able to leverage that experience to propose tiered approaches to occupational exposure assessment—recommendations that have improved the quality of data being collected for occupational exposure assessment under TSCA.
