Coos Bay Rail Bridge Engineering Support Services

In 2011, the Oregon International Port of Coos Bay expanded into the freight rail business with the initial goal to connect two major centers of manufacturing and commerce. By acquiring the 135 mile Coos Bay Rail Link, the port successfully reestablished freight rail service to help disperse the 2.5 million tons of cargo moving annually along the critical freight route between Eugene and Coquille. We were called in to make sure that the system is in safe and operable shape before full service begins.

Our team has been busy inspecting and load rating 118 bridges, reviewing and performing field verification of existing inspection and load rating reports, and preparing a scope of work and bid documents for the proposed bridge repairs. Three of the bridges we’re inspecting are swing-span movable bridges, one of which is the longest in North America. The next leg of our project support will include construction management services once the repairs are put into action.

The Coos Bay Rail freight route is used by forest product, natural-gas, and manufacturing companies. Our services will help the port expand on their ability to deliver cargo for these industries, creating an economic boost for the area.
