Located within Greenfield, Minnesota, Dance Hall Creek is within a watershed identified as a "hot-spot" for contributing nutrients to Sarah Lake. Combining this finding with land use development changes, the area was in a prime position to integrate residential development with water-quality and natural resource improvement recommendations.
Hennepin County contracted our team to work with City, watershed, and private landowner input to prepare a 300-acre integrated natural resources plan and best management practice (BMP) analysis. The goals were to reduce phosphorus entering Sarah Lake, restore and conserve critical natural resources, vegetation, and hydrologic character, and encourage development patterns that balance City economic goals, consumer preferences, and natural resource conservation and restoration.
Our team performed field assessments, developed a study area master plan, conceptual site diagrams, feasible water-quality improvement BMPs prioritized based on pollutant reduction potential and a cost benefit analysis. Our work sets the stage for future design and implementation measures that will have natural area amenity and environmental benefits for the community.
