New elementary school embodies modern learning and energy efficiency

Faced a steadily increasing student population, Alvin Independent School District (ISD) determined that their best strategy to increase capacity would be to replace the unoccupied Longfellow Elementary building with a new elementary school. They reached out to our team to develop a one-story, energy-efficient school to support modern learning for 800 Alvin ISD elementary students.

Having worked with Alvin ISD on other schools, we had developed several successful prototype designs. The selected design, last used for York Elementary School, was one of our most successful designs for the District due to its high level of building performance, sustainable features, and curriculum integration. For the new Dr. James Red Duke Elementary School, we refined the facility to operate on 21 kilo British thermal units per square foot, which is less energy used than a third of the schools in the United States. We designed the interior to support an engaged learning model that features transparent flex spaces, providing easy observation of small group learning and additional teaching opportunities. We also worked to preserve the site’s mature trees and native vegetation.

This sustainable, high-performance school will serve as a teaching tool that educates students about resource conservation and functionality, while reducing operational costs for Alvin ISD.
