Dulles International Airport Concourse E Expansion - Engineering Services
Dulles International Airport’s new 440,000-square-foot (40,877-square-metre), 14-gate concourse serves United Airlines, enhancing passenger experience and operational efficiency. In partnership with ArchKey Solutions, we provided electrical and fire alarm services and led the low-voltage design, including communications, security, public address, and distributed antenna systems.
Our electrical design introduced two new 34.5 kilovolt 480Y/277V, 4000 ampere double-ended substations and repurposed another powering the automated people mover (APM) below ground. To provide uninterrupted operations, an additional, temporary 34.5 kilovolt 480Y, 3200 ampere substation powered a dedicated chiller plant throughout construction.
We seamlessly integrated the fire alarm system with the APM infrastructure while still allowing it to function independently for the new concourse. Our low-voltage design included copper and fiber cabling infrastructure throughout the building to airport displays, speakers, devices, main and intermediate distribution frame (MDF and IDF) rooms, access control, and security cameras throughout, establishing a secure, high-capacity network.
Designed for flexibility and efficiency, the concourse accommodates narrow- and wide-body aircraft at every gate. Retractable passenger boarding bridges seamlessly adjust to serve various aircraft sizes, enhancing operational adaptability. With a focus on resiliency and innovation in both design and construction, the concourse operates reliably and will continue to do so for years to come.
