Eastern Contra Costa Transit Authority Hydrogen Fueling Station

Designing a fueling facility for a fleet of hydrogen fuel cell electric buses

On the road to decarbonization by reducing greenhouse gas emissions

The Eastern Contra Costa Transit Authority (ECCTA) is looking to transition to zero-emission buses by 2036—four years ahead of the deadline set by the California Air Resources Board’s statewide regulations for transit agencies. To advance toward this energy transition goal, the ECCTA engaged us to lead the design of a hydrogen fueling facility for hydrogen fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs).

To support the ECCTA’s plan to operate 30 FCEBs and more than 30 hydrogen fueled paratransit buses, we analyzed their bus operations to establish requirements for the hydrogen refueling station—including reserve days of fueling capacity, redundancy requirements, and dispenser—and prepared a design to meet identified needs. A unique design element of the new facility will include dispensing of hydrogen for full-sized buses as well as paratransit buses and minivans using liquid hydrogen (LH2) as the primary source of fuel, while including a supplemental gaseous (GH2)-supply subsystem. When construction is complete, we’ll conduct and supervise function and performance tests of the facility to validate the contractor’s work.

With a new hydrogen fueling station in place for FCEB buses, the ECCTA will be able to eliminate CO2-tailpipe emissions, contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions and better air quality for the community.
