Serving thousands of Denver’s neediest families, the Eastside Human Services facility brings together sustainability, community-centric design, and a humane approach to creating a secure building—a highlight in one of Denver’s historically under-served, inner-ring neighborhoods.
The building balances security and safety while providing a positive visitor experience. Its orientation is turned to optimize solar function and is mindful not to overwhelm the existing single-family homes in the area with its size. Folding roofs extend to provide shade to lobby spaces and lift the building’s form in a welcoming gesture to the neighborhood.
The finished project exceeds all expectations for environmental stewardship. Daylighting solutions create vibrant office environments while minimizing lighting costs. On-site water treatment systems clean storm water passively. Underfloor air provides a healthier indoor environment and a sloping roof is optimized for the addition of a photovoltaic array in the future.
