Evaluating the regulation of PFAS and emerging contaminants

Our ChemRisk team has been evaluating the regulation of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and other emerging contaminants for more than a decade. This has provided us with a deep understanding of the constantly evolving scientific and policy questions surrounding these substances. When the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) needed help with ongoing scientific projects involving emerging contaminants, they reached out to us to help.

Our services included technical reviews, information research, strategic analysis, and development of recommendations and agency guidance for PFAS risk evaluation activities undertaken by the EPA and state health agencies. We developed a framework for the review of agency risk evaluations and performed a technical review of recently developed state-level PFAS drinking water guidance values. We also initiated work on a revised guidance document for the selection and derivation of toxicity values for remedial investigations and action objectives.

The resulting framework is currently being applied to ongoing reviews of PFAS toxicity values at the federal and state levels.
