Healing through a sense of place and inspiration
Function-focused healthcare design can sometimes overlook the patient experience—inadvertently causing stress and affecting the healing process. When Florida Hospital, an Adventist faith-based institution, set out to create an environment that promoted healing through a sense of place and inspiration, the goal was clear: design a highly-specialized healthcare facility that could stand out as unique and patient-centered within a larger campus.
Designers took the patient’s point of view and incorporated nature-inspired elements to promote healing and a spiritual connection. The design emphasizes calm, bright, and open environments, using soothing colors, soft lines, and natural textures.
Change in healthcare is inevitable, and we knew that flexible design was key. The maternity unit uses standardized elements so the rooms can be easily adapted if the unit is moved and the rooms re-designated for a different type of care. Furniture, too, was selected with flexibility in mind—each piece serves multiple functions, including chairs and stools that adjust and realign to allow staff and visitors space to work, mothers to nurse, and partners to sleep.
