Located in Vancouver’s Hastings Park, the PNE Amphitheatre was a 1960s-era stage. As part of the City of Vancouver’s transformation of Pacific National Exhibition site into a premier outdoor entertainment destination, they wanted to replace the outdated structure with a 10,000-seat venue that would serve as a modern setting for concerts, festivals and community events.
Our team provided building envelope consulting, façade engineering, energy modeling, life-cycle assessment and sustainability services to advance performance and environmental outcomes. The project is targeting Canada Green Building Council (CAGBC) Zero Carbon Building Standard v3 and LEED Gold, with modeling demonstrating a 95 percent reduction in greenhouse gas intensity and a 25 percent reduction in energy-use intensity.
We guided the integration of a high-performance building envelope beneath the exposed timber superstructure, maintaining the design vision while supporting durability and energy performance. For the back-of-house spaces, we optimized envelope design to meet Zero Carbon Thermal Energy Demand Intensity (TEDI) targets, applying efficient air barrier strategies and reducing thermal bridging to lower operational demand and construction cost.
Additional solutions included advanced window detailing to improve thermal performance and moisture resilience, hygrothermal analysis to mitigate condensation risk at the timber roof, and on-site roof observation to support Roofing Contractors Association of BC (RCABC) warranty requirements. Also of note, the 105-metre (344-foot) mass timber arch roof is one of the world’s largest clear-span timber structures.
Opened in time to host Vancouver’s FIFA World Cup 2026 events, the Freedom Mobile Arch is a durable, high-performing facility aligned with the City of Vancouver’s long-term climate goals that will continue to serve the community long into the future.
