WVU Medicine set out to address the growing demand for pediatric specialty services in Morgantown and the surrounding region with an outpatient clinic for their Golisano Children’s Hospital. They selected our team to provide integrated design services for this project.
The space needed to provide more outpatient capacity and improve access to specialty care while also supporting efficient care delivery and coordination among multiple pediatric disciplines. The design would also have to account for current program requirements and incorporate flexibility for future growth and evolving healthcare needs. To meet these goals, our team created a modern outpatient environment that brings pediatric specialties together in one location, improving collaboration among care teams and streamlining the patient experience.
Upon entering the unit, visitors encounter a space inspired by West Virginia University’s mascot, the Mountaineer. Warm golds, blues, and wood tones stretch across a mountainscape sculpted along the walls. Integrated within these scenic forms, interactive graphics provide positive distraction for patients and families. As the landscape winds through the waiting room, it creates a series of strategically sized seating areas, reinforced by playful ceiling elements that offer patients and families a choice of environments for waiting, entertainment, and exploration while maintaining clear sightlines throughout.
Beyond the waiting room, the clinic unfolds through a network of blue, gold, and green trail markers positioned at each corridor intersection, providing intuitive wayfinding to the exam corridors beyond. The colors extend from the ceiling onto the walls and outside corresponding exam rooms where they then transition into a dynamic mountainscape that wraps around the patient care zone.
A network of workstations and touchdown spaces sits along the building perimeter, increasing access to natural daylight and exterior views. Thoughtfully distributed support spaces balance operational efficiency with patient care, reducing travel distances whenever possible. Care team work areas are organized around exam clusters while maintaining flexibility to accommodate varying provider needs and workflows.
By consolidating services within a welcoming and flexible environment, the clinic strengthens care coordination, improves convenience for patients and caregivers, and supports WVU Medicine’s ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality pediatric care throughout the region.
