Greenfield Through Air Drying (TAD) Tissue Plant

Processing pulp into household paper products

From cost estimates to successful startup, we were on hand at every stage of this capital project

When one of our clients of nearly 50 years, J.D. Irving, wanted to build a new tissue facility in Macon, Georgia, they brought in our team to design and support this large-scale, complex greenfield project. The goal? A facility that would convert pulp into ultra-premium household paper products including soft bath tissue and high quality paper towel.

The first thing we worked on was the development of a class 3 capital cost estimate for the new plant. After that was the detail design which included CADSim mass and energy balance, process flow diagrams, process, piping, and instrumentation diagrams, and site development. Work also included general arrangement drawings and the complete civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, and controls design. Besides the core plant, we also designed an office complex, a shop, stores, and an effluent treatment plant.

With the plant already running at capacity by the grand opening ceremony in fall 2019, our client announced a second phase of the project—adding a second tissue machine to the plant. For the second phase, Stantec once again is providing detailed design engineering services.
