Greenlink Nevada - Specialist Studies

Providing necessary studies for a new renewable energy and transmission initiative

Helping Nevada move closer to a 100 percent renewable future

Nevada Energy set out create a renewable “energy highway” in Nevada that will improve system reliability with its Greenlink Nevada (GLN) project. They engaged our team to perform specialist electromagnetic transient (EMT), sub-synchronous resonance (SSR)/sub-synchronous control interaction (SSCI), and short circuit assessment studies for the proposed project.

We developed power system models and performed detailed steady state and transient studies. We then performed shunt reactor sizing and parallel line resonance studies, looked at transient overvoltage and switching overvoltage (TOV/SOV) and live line maintenance requirements, and performed transmission line and substation insulation coordination studies. Other studies we conducted included single pole trip and reclosing, delayed zero missing, and transient recovery voltage and rate of rise of restriking voltage (TRV/RRRV). We also performed fault duty evaluations at affected and nearby substations to identify possible negative effects on existing transmission facilities and fault-duty-related requirements for proposed equipment within the study.

When complete, GLN will enable integration of up to 5,000 megawatts of renewable energy projects, which will help diversify Nevada’s renewable energy portfolio.
