Enhancing the community through mobility improvements and by using art and graphics to bridge language, age, and cultural barriers

Houston’s International Management District (IMD) is one of the most diverse communities in the City. Our job? To work in collaboration with the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) and the IMD to determine how to make the area safer, how to improve the flow of traffic, and how to deliver it all within a shared multimodal system of buses, bikes, and pedestrians.

Our study considered wider sidewalks, enhanced lighting, increased medians for pedestrian landing zones, and an overall enhancement of other safety features. Also, to ensure we designed with community in mind, the study incorporated an extensive public engagement process. We set up interactive booths in churches and schools and participated in community events, including providing a virtual reality demonstration during the Lunar New Year Festival. To ensure our sensitivity and respect for the area’s large immigrant population, our team included a cultural immersion group—Stantec employees that are first-generation immigrants and collectively speak every language of the study area’s demographics.

This study has helped H-GAC and the IMD connect their residents, improve access to transit, enhance the community aesthetics and quality of life, expand economic opportunities, and create a safer, more inclusive district.

All public outreach events are published on the study's website, which our subconsultant developed, and can be viewed at www.imdlivablecenters.com.
