Securing mobility and safety for North Carolina’s coastal areas

Major travel routes along the southeastern coast of the United States can see lots of traffic. U.S. Highway 17 (US 17) is significantly congested throughout the year, particularly during peak tourist season or emergency storm evacuations. Severe accidents have led to day-long backups due to the lack of any nearby alternate routes, affecting businesses, schools, homeowners, and coastal visitor traffic.

To address these issues, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) set out to install the Hampstead Bypass to increase the capacity and safety of the US 17 and Wilmington Market Street corridor. This 14-mile (22.5-kilometre), $400 million complex undertaking required an equally complex team, of which we were proud to be a part.

We’re providing a wide range of analysis and engineering services for the project including roadway and bridge design, indirect and cumulative effects assessment updates, permit assistance, noise analysis, natural resource studies, and more. Additionally, we are working with NCDOT on post-let design services for the northern half of the project.

Once complete, the Hampstead Bypass will better serve the community by separating local traffic from through traffic, improving overall safety for all highway users.
