Harrisonburg Department of Public Transportation Facility

Harrisonburg Public Works needed a new facility but couldn’t shut down for construction—it had the Harrisonburg community to serve. Our design team developed a sophisticated phasing plan to maintain operations in the existing fleet and water department facilities during construction.

By involving stakeholders in initial design workshops and getting their feedback, Harrisonburg’s Department of Public Transportation chose to upgrade current practices and identify important equipment and program requirements. The design-build team worked together with outside city, county, and permitting agencies to pre-approve design approaches to streamline and minimize the overall building and delivery schedule where possible.

Situated on a 16-acre site, the new facility includes a pre-cast concrete and metal panel operations building and maintenance facility. The facility is designed to maintain school buses and more than 350 public works vehicles, including fire, police and rescue, and associated non-revenue vehicles. And because of our experience with sustainable design solutions for public facilities, the team incorporated design features that will benefit employee wellness for years to come.
