Celebrating Hope College’s architectural legacy while looking to the future of the built campus environment
In 2006, during what seemed to be yet another school year, a group of students at Hope College knew they needed place to gather, collaborate, and worship—preferably with 21st century amenities. The students were challenged to write their ideas on paper. These ideas quickly turned into a 17-page proposal presented to College administration. Then president, Jim Bultman, felt immediately inspired. He knew he needed to turn the students’ ideas into Hope College’s reality.
The new 42,000-square-foot student center would be prominently-placed in the heart of the historic campus, the only place Mr. Bultman felt acceptable. The College challenged the design team to make sensitive references to the institutions architectural legacy while looking to the future of the built campus environment.
For most projects, unexpected storms result in unexpected challenges. But for our project team at Hope, the storm meant opportunity. After a storm hit the campus, very old, very large trees were left damaged. The College salvaged the wood by fabricating planks to finish the entire north wall of the new Chapel, bringing a bit of historic beauty into the new center.
