Finding innovative ways to be more resilient while considering environmental, social, and economic influences

Disaster-struck communities are coming back stronger thanks to a grant offered through the National Disaster Resilience Competition (NDRC).

This two-phase competition, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), awarded eligible communities nearly $1 billion in HUD disaster recovery funds. Applicants participated in “Resilience Academies” (workshops) to find innovative ways to be more resilient while considering environmental, social, and economic influences.

We helped eight communities in the NDRC identify solutions to natural hazards including hurricanes, tornadoes, mud slides, and flooding. We also supported seven of the academies as subject-matter experts and facilitators. Our local and national experts offered visioning, education, planning, benefit-cost analysis, and resiliency consultation services to Shelby County, Tennessee; the State of Kansas; the Commonwealth of Kentucky; the State of Tennessee; the State of West Virginia; Tuscaloosa, Alabama; the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico; and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Of this group, three secured over $225,496,537 to help make their communities stronger, more resilient, and better prepared for the future.
