Designing a home for IBM using more square footage than Fenway Park or TD Garden
IBM approached us with a problem: design a space to consolidate its Massachusetts divisions while reducing wasted space and energy inefficiencies. We would need to strategically plan and integrate six distinct software brands into one colossal facility. The result? A home for 3,400 employees and more square footage than Fenway Park or TD Garden.
Our design team had several responsibilities: create functioning office space, facilitate movement, establish communication hubs, break down the scale of the space, and define the space into neighborhoods. We included three design elements (Main Street, Town Centers, and Pavilions) to ground the individual experience and provide a sense of unity throughout the building.
IBM’s largest North American software development lab was built to encourage employee collaboration while accounting for organic growth and future acquisitions. Eye-catching architectural visuals serve as landmarks and vibrant colors reinforce brand identity. Constructed for natural growth and minimum energy use, our sustainable workplace solutions provided IBM with the longevity it desired in a home.
