Indian Creek Drive Drainage and Sea Level Rise Adaptation

Indian Creek Village, a man-made barrier island in Miami-Dade County, is home to residential homes and a country club. But with no street lighting, old pavement, no pedestrian path, inadequate drainage, and individual septic tanks for each property, the streetscape and infrastructure needed updating.

Looking to our history of providing community development services to Indian Creek, the Village of Indian Creek hired us to raise the roadways and design a new walking trail and scenic improvements, including lighting that spans the length of the road. We approached the stormwater infrastructure design with an innovative strategy—installing a gravity system with positive drainage to existing outfalls. The pipes were upsized to increase capacity and allow for future conversion of the system to a pressure system, using trenchless methods of using the existing pipe as the carrier.

Throughout the process, we worked closely with the community and village council to address residents’ needs and phased the work to minimize impact to residents. With these improvements in place, the village residents can enjoy increased property values, beautification, and increased safety, along with significantly improved stormwater management and higher water quality discharge to Biscayne Bay.
