Proposed light rail expansion to increase connections across the greater Philadelphia area

Situated in the northern Philadelphia region, King of Prussia (KOP) serves over 130,000 people as one of the largest retail and employment centers. With the projected growth of the area and daily influx of commuters and visitors, the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) wanted a better way to connect people with reliable, convenient transit.

SEPTA proposed expanding the Norristown High Speed Line to KOP with a 4-mile (6.4-killometre) electrified, elevated light rail. This extension would connect Center City, University City, and KOP through five new stations. To support these stations, SEPTA partnered with us to identify and evaluate transit oriented development (TOD) and value capture opportunities surrounding KOP rail stations.

Funded by the Federal Transit Administration’s TOD Planning Pilot Program, the KOP Transit Oriented Communities Plan identified mobility, connectivity, land-use, built form, and placemaking improvements that reflect national trends and future market demand while taking into consideration community needs collected through the public engagement process.
