Providing a safe route away from potentially devastating ocean storms
Sitting on a barrier island at the edge of the Arctic Ocean, the residents of Kivalina, Alaska, see the results of climate change daily. Driven by temperatures in the Arctic that are rising at more than twice the rate of the global average, increasingly violent ocean storms, flooding, disappearing permafrost, and erosion endanger the community.
To increase community resilience and safety, the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (ADOT&PF) is constructing an all-season evacuation road between coastal Kivalina and Kisimigiuqtuq Hill, an elevated inland area approximately seven miles from the ocean.
Our Environmental Services and Transportation teams are working with the ADOT&PF and multiple stakeholders—including the Federal Highway Administration, the Northwest Arctic Borough, the Native Village of Kivalina, and the City of Kivalina—on the gravel roadway that includes a causeway across Kivalina Lagoon. The road can be used by community members in the event of a catastrophic storm or ocean surge.
The team delivered the project to the construction phase in just 22 months—putting Kivalina residents on the road to a more secure future.
