KY 8 Licking River Bridge Replacement

Originally built in 1936, the KY 8 bridge over the Licking River connecting Covington and Newport, Kentucky has exceeded its original design life. The bridge no longer supports the needs of two growing cities and 700 average pedestrians that cross it each day—and weight restrictions prevent public transportation buses and other commercial vehicles from using it. With a new bridge needed, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) initiated the Commonwealth's first progressive design-build project to replace the bridge to meet modern standards.

We’re the lead design firm on the PCL Construction Design-Build team selected to replace the bridge. The team works to meet the project goals of providing a safe crossing for all user types with a signature design that enhances the visual appeal of the crossing. Our role? We focus on the structural, bridge-type, engineering, safety, design, and usage aspects of the project. Bridge architects Rosales + Partners, concentrate on aesthetic, contextual, historical, and community facets. An aesthetic committee formed by the KYTC works with the bridge architect to guide the signature bridge appearance and features.

When the bridge is complete, historic Covington and Newport will enjoy a modern, renewed link that will serve each community well into the future.
