Created in the 1980s by damming up a natural stream in the Simpson Creek watershed that ultimately discharges to the Little Miami River—a State and National Wild Scenic River—the 2.6-acre (1.1-hectare) lake in Landen-Deerfield Park was established purely for aesthetic and recreational purposes. While this lake provided viewshed and recreational opportunities for the Landen community for years, the lake was frequently overrun by nuisance species. Due to its shallow depths and heavy sediment load, the lake had become expensive to maintain, prone to downstream flooding, and often wasn’t attractive to visitors.
The Warren County Park District (WCPD) set out to address these issues and engaged us as part of the design-build team to help. They tasked us with delivering a solution that balances watershed and ecosystem services, incorporates nature-based solutions, and promotes passive recreation in the park.
We planned and designed the restoration of the existing pond by modifying the outlet structure, creating a naturalized stream channel, and converting portions of the pond into emergent wetlands and pollinator habitat. We also incorporated in-stream habitat features, native vegetation, and a prairie buffer to improve water quality, reduce flooding risks, enhance wildlife habitat, and support stormwater management.
Beyond ecological restoration, the project serves as a living classroom. New trails, nature-play features, interpretive elements, and educational opportunities help visitors connect with the importance of healthy streams, wetlands, pollinator habitats, and water quality stewardship. Located within one of the region's most visited parks, the restoration demonstrates how nature-based solutions can enhance environmental outcomes while creating meaningful community experiences.
