Our job was to upgrade the rail yard while keeping it in service over the two-year construction period

After decades of servicing LIRR’s train cars, Johnson Avenue Yard at Jamaica Station desperately needed a wholesale upgrade. With the opening of the Barclays Center at Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn, LIRR saw a need for a new rail service connection from Jamaica. The solution? They commissioned an expedited design build project to replace misaligned tracks, makeshift retaining walls, and obsolete duct banks as well as to make room for the southward expansion of the station.

The challenge of realigning and raising the four-track rail yard, while replacing its infrastructure, was complicated by the need to maintain rail service to half the yard for 23 months of the two-year construction period. During this time, the yard was reshaped by the design and construction of a new retaining wall, four new tracks and switches, an underground relieving platform on micropiles, a modified bridge, improved lighting, drainage, and water distribution, and a new duct bank system with separate power and communications networks—all while keeping the trains running.

LIRR is now better equipped to maintain its fleet of rail cars for rush hour peak service, and they now have capacity for expanded service between Queens and Brooklyn.
