Framingham Logan Express Parking Garage Expansion

The Framingham Logan Express Parking Garage serves as a key regional transit link, connecting communities across MetroWest to New England’s largest airport. As demand increased, the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) advanced a garage expansion to add capacity and improve how the facility operates and serves passengers.

Massport had engaged our team to provide design services for the original 1,100-space precast concrete replacement garage in 2015. For this expansion, we again served as lead designer. The expansion added three parking levels, extended vertical circulation, and introduced two new elevators. The project also included a full renovation of the bus terminal to improve flow and comfort along with an update of the garage façade with architectural solar panels that support reduced energy demand.

Early coordination shaped the construction approach. Collaboration with precast manufacturers informed crane selection and placement, leading to a dual-crane strategy that supported efficient, parallel work. Coordination with the adjacent property owner enabled temporary street closures, creating space for staging and consistent material deliveries.

Passenger experience guided our interior improvements including updated seating, finishes, and clear wayfinding. Public amenities were upgraded, and perimeter seating offers views of bus and taxi activity along with flight information displays. A coordinated palette and integrated lighting create a bright, calm environment.

Sustainability was a central driver of the expansion. A building-integrated photovoltaic system offsets over half of the facility’s energy demand, supported by efficient HVAC, lighting, and passive ventilation. Additional features include electric vehicle charging, a tire inflation station, and dedicated parking for low-emission vehicles. With collaborative focus by the design team and construction manager on Massport’s Sustainability Guidelines, the Framingham Logan Express Parking Garage became Massport’s first Parksmart certified facility.

Together, these improvements strengthen a reliable transit connection, supporting daily travel, improving access to the airport, and creating a more comfortable and efficient experience for the surrounding community.
