This project’s bioengineered stormwater treatment techniques pioneered new, innovative approaches in Virginia

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation planned to widen a section of Lorton Road as one of Virginia’s first green highways. It would feature a variety of low impact development (LID) and runoff reduction practices for the treatment of stormwater runoff.

As part of the team selected to develop construction documents, Stantec provided innovative stormwater management, mitigation, landscape architecture, ecology, and regulatory permitting services. We coordinated with stakeholders to optimize design and avoid significant impacts to cultural and historic resources. Our team evaluated the feasibility of lower-cost infiltration practices and provided LID coordination as well as quality assurance during construction. Preparing the conceptual and final landscape design included providing our engineering recommendations, details, specifications, and landscape architecture design.

The practice specifications developed for this project further aided the Center for Watershed Protection in refining the Baywide Stormwater Design Criteria. The project also serves as a pilot project for VDOT to test the applicability of a wide array of sustainable, distributed stormwater treatment practices in the right-of-way.
