Los Alamos County GIS System and Asset Management Upgrade

The Los Alamos County Public Works Department (LACPWD) wanted to get better insights into the condition and performance of their assets. To achieve this, they hired our geographic information systems (GIS) analysts to upgrade their system linking financial data to geographic information and embark on an asset management journey.

First, we cleaned up the data and established an authoritative system of record for the utility asset inventory. This involved converting record drawings into GIS and adding GPS data with sub-foot accuracy to the new GIS database. We also checked that the sewer main flow direction and connectivity were correctly modeled through geometric network topology.

Once we had collected this new, quality data in the standardized geodatabase, we coordinated with the County through a series of workshops. This helped to smoothly transition the utility asset inventory into the new system. We also created a customized GIS mobile application.

These advancements will allow LACPWD to better maintain their utility assets, achieve more accurate financial planning, and streamline operations for improved data sharing across departments.
