One of the world's most ambitious cultural institutions, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art explores the power of visual storytelling across generations. Conceived by filmmaker George Lucas and businesswoman Mellody Hobson, the museum's mission extends beyond exhibiting art, creating a place where education, creativity, and human connection inspire visitors to see the world through new perspectives.
Designed by internationally renowned architect Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, the museum's iconic form emerges from the landscape as a sculptural work of art in its own right. Our Stantec team helped the 300,000-square-foot museum seamlessly integrate galleries, educational spaces, theaters, gathering places, and expansive public gardens into a single experience.
Visitors arrive through the landscaped Lucas Plaza and are welcomed by a dramatic oculus that frames the journey ahead. Within the museum, immersive gallery spaces house one of the world's premier collections of narrative art, while dedicated educational facilities support learning, exploration, and community engagement.
A global team of more than 150 architects, engineers, designers, and specialists worked together to bring the complex structure to life. The museum's sophisticated geometry challenged conventional design and construction methods, driving the development of advanced digital workflows and cloud-based collaboration platforms that enabled real-time coordination across continents and disciplines.
From parametric modeling and software interoperability to paperless project delivery and fully integrated virtual collaboration, the project pioneered new approaches that have since influenced large-scale design and construction practices worldwide.
