Mariposa Land Port of Entry Expansion and Modernization
Stantec completely redesigned the largest commercial border crossing in Arizona, which accommodates over 1.5 million vehicles per year. Faced with an economy on the mend and robust international trade with Mexico, the General Services Administration and US Customs and Border Protection needed to increase capacity and do so quickly.
As Engineer of Record, Stantec provided survey, civil engineering, building information modeling, and communications systems. Nearly 43 acres were demolished; then augmented with an additional 12 acres for the state-of-the-art expansion. Over a mile of retaining wall, potable water, and sanitary sewer was necessary to create the foundation for the new facility.
Border wait times were already exhausting—only amplified by the Arizona heat, and the last thing we wanted was to make matters worse during construction. So we developed a four phase construction plan to allow for continuous port operations with minimal disruptions. Now complete and fully operational, the new port offers significant facility upgrades for the officers use, act as a gateway for travelers between the US and Mexico—all while making the trip a lot easier.
