Celebrating history, sport, and community through the creation of a new park

When the City of New York and Yankees decided to move and rebuild Yankee Stadium, one of baseball’s most hallowed grounds, the question became what to do with the old site? They turned to Stantec’s landscape architects, urban designers and engineers to celebrate history, sport and community through the creation of a new park.

Our approach emphasizes the park as more than just a collection of ballfields, but as a highly accessible park for the broadest possible audiences. Within the footprint of historic Yankee Stadium and adjacent to Ruppert Plaza sits Heritage Field, the centerpiece of the project, with new little league, softball and championship baseball fields contained within a landscaped perimeter. The field level contains a walkway loop, ball field fencing, and team seating areas. Ruppert Plaza visually and physically links the rooftop park and Heritage Field as one cohesive recreation space for nearby Bronx residents and the millions of visitors to Yankee Stadium each year.

The park commemorates the Stadium’s rich history with a timeline of inlay granite pavers, a distinctive turf inlay of the former field, “ticket stub” wall plaques and benches, and interpretive displays.
